Sibu Hospital is the second largest hospital in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. It is the main tertiary and referral hospital for the Central Region of Sarawak, Malaysia. It serves as referral hospital for the District Hospitals along the Rejang basin and also Mukah, Saratok and Bintulu.

History

Hospital Sibu started operations in 1994. Previously, the medical needs of Sibu town was served by the Lau King Howe Hospital in downtown area. However, the old hospital soon grew too small for the growing population of the town. In view of this as well as the need for a more equipped hospital that could serve as referral centre for the Central Region of Sarawak, the federal government started construction on the present hospital.

Sibu Hospital has the capacity for 750 beds but currently the official bed count is 534. It is a referral hospital for the District Hospitals along the Rejang basin and also Mukah, Saratok and Bintulu Hospital. It provides basic specialty and a few sub specialty inpatient services. There are a wide range of outpatient specialist services. A number of sub specialty services are provided by visiting specialists from Kuching such as Nephrology, Cardiology and Neurosurgery.

The mission of Hospital Sibu is to provide quality services with emphasis on the values of caring, teamwork and professionalism as to meet the needs and expectations of its clients. This is in line with the mission and vision of the Malaysian Ministry of Health.

Accreditation

Hospital Sibu is accredited by the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health(MSQH)[1] .

Services and Statistics

Hospital Sibu not only serves the medical needs of the population of Sibu Division, but also the tertiary care and specialist needs of Bintulu Division, Kapit Division, Mukah Division and Sarikei Division.

The population under direct coverage of Hospital Sibu is 200,000 with another 300,000 population via it referral system and tertiary care.

Teaching Hospital

Hospital Sibu serves as a teaching hospital for a wide field of medical and allied health personnel. The medical faculty of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak uses the hospital as a teaching hospital for its medical students.

It is also a teaching hospital for the Sibu Nursing College as well as Kolej Ita which also has a nursing programme. It is also a training centre for Community Nurses from Sabah and Sarawak who are undergoing training to become Staff Nurses under the Malaysian Ministry of Health.
